Burt Lancaster biography


Burt Lancaster, 1913-1994, American actor. Originally a circus performer, Burt Lancaster made his debut in The Killers (1946).

In the following years, Lancaster alternated between athletic and devilish roles in, for example, The Flame and the Arrow (1950) and The Crimson Pirate (1952) and characterful performances in From Here to Eternity (1953) ) and The Rose Tattoo (1955).

He produced the Academy Award-winning everyday drama Marty (1955) and continued as a producer, starring himself in films such as Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and Birdman of Alcatraz (1962).

Lancaster won an Oscar for his role as the lay preacher in Richard Brooks' Elmer Gantry (1960) and recognition as the prince in Luchino Visconti's Il Gattopardo (1963, The Leopard).

Among Burt Lancaster's later notable films are 1900 (1976), Atlantic City (1981), and Field of Dreams (1989).
