Dorothy Arzner biography Dorothy Arzner was born on January 3, 1897. She was an American film director. Especially in the 1930s, Arzner made a series of films about independent women torn between work and love. She directed i.a. Katharine Hepburn as a daring aviator who falls in love with a married man in Christopher Strong (1933). In Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), she delivered a critique of the variety show world's often derogatory attitude towards women and anticipated several themes in 1970s women's films.
