Actress and singer Cher

Biography of Cher

Cher (Cherilyn Sarkisian La Pier) was born in 1946, an American singer and actress.

Cher began her career as a backing singer for, e.g., Phil Spector until, in 1965, she formed the duo Sonny & Cher with her husband Sonny Bono (1935-98).

In the following years, they recorded several songs that became significant international sales successes, e.g., I Got You, Babe (1965) and The Beat Goes On (1967).

As a soloist, Cher recorded in the same period, i.a., Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (1966) and Sunny (1966).

In the 1970s, Cher pursued a solo career, and after divorcing in 1974, she released the song Dark Lady, which became a million-seller.

In 1975 she became the host of her own television show Cher. She then made the leap to the feature film, winning great recognition throughout the 1980s as an actress in films such as Mike Nichols' Silkwood (1983) and Norman Jewison's (b. 1926) Moonstruck (1987), which won her an Oscar.
