Biography of Donald Sutherland

Donald Sutherland, born July 17, 1935, is a Canadian-American film actor. He is the father of Kiefer Sutherland.

Donald Sutherland broke through in darkly humorous roles in the war films The Dirty Dozen (1967) and M.A.S.H. (1970).

He then developed a talent for playing demonic, often unsympathetic supporting characters in, e.g., Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 (1976), Lock Up (1989), and Disclosure (1994).

He has also cultivated more quietly intrusive characters with excellent performances in Klute (1971), Don't Look Now (1973), Ordinary People (1980), A Dry White Season (1989), and as the painter Paul Gauguin in Henning Carlsen's Oviri (1986).

In recent years, Donald Sutherland has given solid supporting role performances in, e.g., The Italian Job (2003) and in the Jane Austen film adaptation Pride & Prejudice (2005) as well as in the TV series Commander in Chief 2005-06, Dirty Sexy Money 2007 -09 and The Pillars of the Earth 2010.
