Jennifer Garner biography

Jennifer Garner was born on April 17, 1972, in Houston, Texas, to a chemical engineer father and an English professor mother.

She was the second of three daughters, all of whom were young when the family moved to Charleston, West Virginia. The Garner household was conservative, banning makeup and earrings, creating a stark contrast between the appearance of the young Jennifer and the older one TV audiences have come to know.

As a child, she was an aspiring ballerina who practiced for up to six hours daily. During her youth, this passion for performing translated into an interest in acting. After graduating from George Washington High School in Charleston, she enrolled in a theater program at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

Her love of acting fully blossomed during her undergraduate years, and she eschewed the traditional college party lifestyle in favor of honing her craft. After graduating from Denison in 1994, Jennifer decided to forgo her previous plans to continue her theater studies at Yale University instead of moving to New York City. Her goal was to try out for some auditions to see how far her training would take her.

Due to good schooling, talent, and photogenic looks, it didn't take Jennifer long to find stage work. Within a month of her arrival in New York, Jennifer landed an understudy role in a Broadway production of A Month in the Country. Aware of her abilities as an actress, she moved to Los Angeles to seek out film work. Success did not elude her, and she soon made her screen debut in the made-for-TV movie Zoya.

Over the next two years until 1998, she found consistent screen work. Although the roles she was given were often minor, their placement among popular sitcoms and successful films raised Jennifer's profile in Hollywood. Guest spots on the shows Spin City and Law and Order and appearances in films such as Deconstructing Harry, and In Harm's Way all added greatly to Jennifer's acting CV.

In 1998, she landed a starring role in the Fox drama series Significant Others. Due to poor ratings, Significant Others was pulled from the air after just one month. Jennifer auditioned for a spot on the hit WB series Felicity and won the job after four more auditions. Her role as Noel Crane's meddling ex-girlfriend Hannah was slated as a one-off guest spot. Felicity producer J.J. Abrams (aka Jeffrey Abrams) was impressed with her performance to call Jennifer back for several additional appearances.

Felicity provided her with more than consistent work: It was on the set of the show that her relationship began with actor Scott Foley, leading to the couple's marriage in the fall of 2000.

Jennifer got another stab at a lead role in 1999 when she was cast in the Jennifer Love Hewitt vehicle, Time of Your Life. Although Jennifer's individual performance was critically acclaimed, the Party of Five spin-offs shared the same fate as Significant Others, being canceled after a short stint on air. Despite its failure, her appearances on the show contributed to her visibility. She portrayed roles in large-scale projects such as the films Pearl Harbor (as Nurse Sandra) and Dude, Where's My Car? (as Ashton Kutcher's girlfriend).

In 2000, she was approached by Felicity producer J.J. Abrams with an offer to audition for his new project, an action series he was developing for ABC. Her interest was piqued by his description of the show Alias, and she enrolled in martial arts classes to prepare for her audition. Her persistence paid off, and she was cast in the lead role of Sydney Bristow, a CIA agent juggling multiple identities.

A welcome change from her previous experiences, Alias has enjoyed good ratings, a solid critical reception, and a renewal for a second season. The show has spawned a loyal fan base, and in February 2002, Jennifer was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama.

Alias is under contract with ABC through the 2002-03 season, and as the show's popularity continues to rise, there seems little doubt that another contract renewal will follow.

Jennifer has continued to expand her acting experience. She will appear alongside Ben Affleck in a film adaptation of the Daredevil comic and in a small role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the Steven Spielberg film, Catch Me If You Can.
