Marilyn Monroe biography
Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Marilyn Monroe was one of Hollywood's movie stars in the 1950s-60s; she was world famous for i.a. the films Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire in 1953.
She is one of the most adored stars in film history. As an actress, Marilyn Monroe represented the myth of the dumb blonde who simultaneously managed to bring both heart and pain to the stereotypical role. In most of her roles, she portrayed a naïve innocence combined with an intuitive knowledge of what is morally right and wrong; the sexy blonde became an alluring image of unspoiled humanity.
Marilyn Monroe was first noticed in John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and got her first starring role in Henry Hathaway's thriller Niagara (1953). She appeared in a total of 28 films. She showed a versatile acting talent, particularly with a flair for comedic roles such as in Howard Hawks' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Billy Wilder's The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Some Like It Hot (1959).
In these films and Otto Preminger's River of No Return (1954), she also showed an ability for rhythmic timing in song numbers. Finally, she played character roles such as in Joshua Logan's (1908-88) Bus Stop (1956) and John Huston's The Misfits (1961); the latter became her last film.
Marilyn Monroe's great success on the silver screen contrasted with her troubled private life. She had a somewhat changeable upbringing; the name Mortensen comes from the mother's Norwegian husband, who was separated at the time of birth but was hardly her father. She was married three times, the second time in 1954 to baseball star Joe DiMaggio and the third time from 1956-1961 to playwriter Arthur Miller, who wrote the screenplay for The Freed.
Another part of the Marilyn Monroe myth revolves around the star who, despite enormous adoration, felt lonely and fell victim to Hollywood's glamorous surface and unhappy childhood. Marilyn Monroe presumably died of a drug overdose.
Died August 4, 1962, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, USA.
