Actor Yul Brynner

Biography of Yul Brynner

Yul Brynner was born July 11, 1920, in Vladivostok, Russia.

He was a Russian-American actor. He became known for his role as the charismatic and crowned King of Siam in Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's (1895-1960) musical The King And I, which premiered in 1951 on Broadway.

The role of the King of Siam was Brynner's breakthrough after a checkered career in the entertainment business. The success continued with Walter Lang's (1898-1972) film adaptation of the play in 1956, which earned Brynner an Oscar.

In the following years, he retained his star status in villainous and western roles, i.a., in John Sturges' (1911-92) The Magnificent Seven (1960).

As his film career began to fade, Yul Brynner returned to the theater in 1977, where he repeated the success of The King And I until a few months before his death.

Died: October 10, 1985, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
