Dorothy Arzner biography
Dorothy Arzner was born on January 3, 1897. She was an American film director.
Especially in the 1930s, Arzner made a series of films about independent women torn between work and love. She directed i.a. Katharine Hepburn as a daring aviator who falls in love with a married man in Christopher Strong (1933).
In Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), she delivered a critique of the variety show world's often derogatory attitude towards women and anticipated several themes in 1970s women's films. Dorothy Arzner was then also rediscovered by female film critics from this period.
