Fatty Arbuckle biography

Fatty Arbuckle (Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle) was born on March 24, 1887

He was an American film comedian who began as a member of Mack Sennett's farce group, the Keystone Kops, and from 1913 worked as a director of his own films.

His corpulent figure, round baby face, and ability to throw layer cakes equally well with both hands became very popular. At the height of his career in 1921, Arbuckle was embroiled in a sex scandal and charged with manslaughter.

The charges were dropped, but the press and the public condemned him, and he was blacklisted in Hollywood. The case led to the creation of the Hays' Office, which zealously guarded the film city's image and morals as a censorship body. Arbuckle's films were boycotted in cinemas, but under the pseudonym William B. Goodrich, he did direct some farces for his old colleagues.

Died June 29, 1933
