Heath Ledger (Heath Andrew Ledger) was born on April 4, 1979, in Perth, Australia.
He was an Australian actor, photographer, and director who had his big cinematic breakthrough in the mid-2000s.
His film work includes 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Patriot (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001), Monster's Ball (2001), Lords of Dogtown (2005), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Candy (2006), I'm Not There (2007), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), the latter two being published posthumously. He also produced and directed music videos.
For Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger won "the New York Film Critics Circle Award in the Best Actor category and the Best International Actor Award from the Australian Film Institute; he became the first to receive the latter award posthumously. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Golden Globe Award, and Academy Award in the Best Actor category, as the eighth youngest in the class at the time.
Ledger's work as the Joker in The Dark Knight received great international acclaim and praise from fans and critics. Ledger received several posthumous awards, such as the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture, and a BAFTA Award in the Best Supporting Actor category.
Ledger died on January 22, 2008, in his apartment in Manhattan, New York, due to an involuntary overdose of sleeping, anti-anxiety, and pain medication. At the time of his death, he was filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus as Tony, and his role was subsequently taken over and shared between Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law.
He is survived by a daughter, Matilda Rose (b. 2005), with actress Michelle Williams.
