Joan Crawford, 1904-1977, American actress.

Joan Crawford managed to maintain a position as one of Hollywood's great stars in a career that included more than 80 films. She became especially famous for her roles as a strong, dominant, and passionate woman who could not conform to traditional femininity.

Crawford broke through in the 1920s and had her most famous roles in the 1940s and early 1950s, including in Michael Curtiz's Mildred Pierce (1945), which won her an Oscar, as well as Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952).

In 1962, she gave one of the most outstanding performances of her career in Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. In Mommie Dearest (1981), Crawford is portrayed as a self-absorbed career woman and an inadequate mother.
