She rose to stardom as the strong-willed heroine in the science fiction horror film Alien (1979), which spawned three sequels (1986, 1992, and 1997).

Her other films include The Year of Living Dangerously (1983), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Working Girl (1988), Copycat (1995), and The Ice Storm (1997).
