Actress Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes biography

Katie Holmes was born on December 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio, USA.

The youngest of five children - she has 3 older sisters and an older brother - Katie had no intention of becoming an actress while growing up in Toledo.

Her mother, Kathy Holmes, enrolled her leggy daughter in Margaret O'Brien's modeling school in Toledo, which ultimately led Katie to her current career path.

During her summer vacation from Notre Dame Academy (an all-girls Catholic high school), a 17-year-old Katie attended a modeling convention in New York City.

At the convention, a talent scout from Los Angeles approached Katie and encouraged her to audition for the rest of the summer in California. Katie was off to Hollywood with her mother to try her luck in acting, despite her father's initial skepticism.

Luck was definitely on her side, as her feature film debut took no more than one audition. Inexperienced and characterized by a drop of naivety, she was cast in The Ice Strom as Tobey Maguire's girlfriend.

After filming The Ice Storm, Katie returned to Toledo to finish high school. She was offered the role of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but luckily for Sarah Michelle Gellar, she turned it down to graduate high school. With a film credit and a newfound passion, she dedicated her summer to starring in a local theater production of Damn Yankees. That's when Katie heard a rumor that Kevin Williamson of Scream fame was casting actors for his teenage TV drama.

With nothing to lose, she submitted her home video audition and hoped for the best. And that's what the Dawson's Creek writer/producer saw when he saw her tape: the best. Impressed by what he saw, Williamson immediately invited her to come to the West Coast for a callback. Still, due to her commitment to Damn Yankees, she asked Williamson if the offer could be postponed until a later date.

It was obviously worth waiting for; he rescheduled so she could attend. Williamson didn't need acting experience to convince him she was suitable for the role of Joey Potter for Dawson's Creek.

In the series, she was cast as the girl from the wrong side of the river.

Viewers have been tuning into Katie Holmes and the high school drama since 1998, watching the group of angsty teens (including Michelle Williams sporting a bearded lip) deal with teenage life.

Based on the success of Dawson's Creek, Katie Holmes was cast in the thriller Disturbing Behavior in 1998. The following summer, Katie could be seen in theaters in two feature films, Go and like the heroine of Teaching Mrs. Tingle (also directed by Kevin Williamson).

While walking the halls of high school in Dawson's Creek, she appeared in Wonder Boys (2000) with Michael Douglas and her Ice Storm co-star, Tobey Maguire.

Winner of the 1999 MTV Movie Award for Best Female Breakthrough Performance, she was named one of Teen People Magazine's "21 Hottest Stars Under 21" and Sweden's Expressen Friday's "Babe of the Year" in 1998.

Katie Holmes got a role in the pumped-up youth film 'Go' (1999) and 'Teaching Mrs. Tingle' (1999).

After her parallel TV series ended in 2003, she appeared in lesser-known film productions, but Holmes was also seen in the terrific 'Batman Begins' (2005). She has been in a relationship with Tom Cruise since December 2006, with whom she has a child.
